Tournament Report - November 1st, 2017

This is the K2 list I brought to my latest local tournament. Ended up 2-2; could have done better but one loss the rolls didn't quite line up late game and the other I chose targets poorly. Matches were all a lot of fun. We did play under the new rules changes.

Match Results were as follows:

  • Vs. Mirror Match (K2/Rey): Win. My deck was a bit more refined to take advantage of the pairing than their deck, mostly down to them being a newer player with less to build with. Still a fun match, but pretty one-sided. I also rolled ridiculously well compared to them.
  • Vs. Sabine/Ezra: Loss. Went after Ezra first, which is still think was somewhat the right call since it let me accumulate resources without that little thief stealing em to pay +2 Resources on not one but two weapons for K2. Just didn't finish this one off - the biggest thing I couldn't deal with was Never Tell Me The Odds into 10+ damage from Sabine, was a total game changer - completely wiped Rey off the face of the board in one go. Game was still close, think I lost by 2-3 health.
  • Vs. Palpatine: Win. Very, very close match. I spread the damage pretty much evenly from Palp and think it worked out. I wasn't in a position early to dump it all on one character or the other. It made the match close in the end, but I feel I did what I needed to.
  • Vs. eThrawn/Unkar: Loss. This player expressed his discontent for the new Thrawnkar deck as we started, having had no luck in previous matches and I fell victim to some poor decision making. For some reason I decided that Thrawn was the target to go after here - maybe it was the Elite dice throwing me off, I dunno. Now to be fair, I killed him by Round 2. Rolled damage hard the first couple rounds. The issue was this gave them time to set up Crime Lord, which ended up killing both of my characters in the next couple rounds while completely mitigating my remaining damage. Total misplay on my part - had I gone after the Yellow Only portion of their deck I would have easily seen this one out. Ah well. Didn't make the mental switch from Buy Out to Crime Lord, which definitely would have affected my choices.

Video of the match against Palpatine is here, if you want to see this list in action and see a pretty fun, close match: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GW202Nsgnbs

Overall, this deck is a blast. The cards themselves are pretty straight forward but have a lot of potential for shenanigans and crazy plays. The keys to the deck are definitely Bestow and Redeploys and timing them well, with Leadership there to double-down on early game Rey when she has three weapons and K2 has none. That being said, I found this deck still effective when those Bestows are hiding at the bottom of the deck.

The biggest issues with the list is the lack of mitigation and late-game mitigation especially. Deflect, Overconfidence, and Guard all rely on spotting blue or using blue dice (I actually got caught almost playing an Overconfidence after Rey had died in the Sabine match-up, completely forgetting about Spotting but someone thankfully corrected me) and in the late game it was always K2 left, so all of those mitigation cards are essentially useless for seeing out a game. Swapping Overconfidence for something like Sound The Alarm or something to that variety would probably be a good way to go. Red doesn't bring a ton of great mitigation, but I'll keep tinkering with it to move more of the Spot a Blue into more generic mitigation for the late game.

Thanks for the read! I do think this deck has a lot of potential and can be made better, but this is what I ran with.

Do you find you are able to claim the battlefield often? Would stuff like Defensive Position and Dug In work well?

Saw the video against the Palp yesterday, think I'm going to try a variation of this tonight at a casual tournament.

@darthryanI think with the rise of Palpatine and some other fast decks like Sabine (at least in my local play), I sort of moved the deck away from worrying about that. Overall, I'd say I was able to make a move on the field maybe 25-30% of the time, something like that. I think in that Palp match I claimed maybe one time, which is expected against a Palp.

This deck's style is okay with resolving a variety of sides, since you want shields and resources as you go, and by Round 2 or 3 you'll ideally have 6-7 dice in the pool so resolving can take a few turns . This list also has the potential to set up late round plays with Bestow and Leadership, which essentially gives up the claim since you are rolling and resolving an entirely new activation. I also don't run anything to speed it up, like Force Speed or Hit and Run, which I've been considering since the tournament.

Defensive Position might have been a decent option in some situations so maybe I'd consider adding 1, but I can't say I was missing something like Dug in. If you want shields, I think I would just go for Defensive Stance for the 2 Shields no matter who has the field (at the same cost as Dug In) or Spirit of Rebellion for some free shields.

Good luck in your tournament! :)
